Historic Biltmore Conservatory

historic conservatory

Renaissance chateaus in France and England inspired the design of the Biltmore Estate. Typical of the time, the estate features steeply pitched roofs, turrets, and sculptural ornaments. Built by George Vanderbilt and finished in 1895, this Asheville, NC attraction is of special interest for its two conservatory style buildings.

The octagonal orangery is truly stunning. The interior is lined with natural finish hardwood, arches grace the entrances, and the arch theme is repeated through out the woodwork. Plantings and nature enliven the living space of the home.

Typical of public conservatories built during this period, the Biltmore conservatory is grand and impressive, yet in proportion to this castle-like home and immense grounds.

It is Victorian era conservatories like these that sparked the revival of conservatory building for public gardens and homes. Here, our lineage begins with rooms inspired by nature, but not dedicated to it. Conservatories become living spaces for relaxation and enjoyment.
